We started by taking the original footage to a place in Burbank, California called Reflex Technologies. The owner of the company, Reed Bovee, made the transfer and then from that, isolated each cut and did a basic color and density correction.
Once that was done, I put the footage in my editing system and did my own density correction, and took out deep scratches, of which there were aplenty. I also decided to release this print in its original 4:3 aspect ratio, the way it was shot. When we put out the last DVD, we tried to make it ‘widescreen,’ but in doing that, we lost a lot of information on the frame, as well as blowing up the image about 35%, which didn’t really do much to help its clarity. Going back to its original aspect ratio adds a degree of sharpness to the image.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are still some dark and grainy scenes in this movie, but the difference is plainly noticeable if one were to do a side-by-side comparison.
Some shots themselves were enhanced, and in some rare cases, replaced with better shots (like some of the moon shots, for example).
This DVD-R comes with the usual extras (director commentary, behind-the-scenes documentary, trailers, etc.). Those are nothing new, but if you are familiar with its early release, this new improved remastering will knock that out of the water. You can order it directly from this website, or you can also find it on Amazon and Ebay. Enjoy…and beware the moon.
